Blackie's investigation leads him to a hotel, where he suspects the clerk, French, of being the killer due to a mistaken identity involving a baseball lineup change. After Blackie uses a fake blackmail scheme to lure French into a trap, the porter confesses to the murders while attempting to extort money.
